Our History

In 1904, Louis G. Brumleve started a harness shop called “Louis Brumleve Co.” on Main Street in Teutopolis, where the post office is located today. His primary business was making harnesses for work horses used on the farm and as a mode of transportation. In 1909, he moved his operation to 115 West Main St., where he continued to make and repair harnesses and horse collars. In 1932, Joseph L. Brumleve, the oldest son of Louis, came into the business and worked with his father as a harness maker. His brother Claude joined later in 1938. In 1943, Claude left for the navy and returned to the business in 1946. In 1948, Joe and Claude became partners in the business and changed its name to “Brumleve Harness and Canvas.” The primary business was making harnesses and canvas covers, but they also sold hardware and work shoes.

The Shift from Leather to Canvas

In 1977, Don J. Brumleve, Joseph’s son, joined the family business. A year later, Joseph retired from the firm, but remained associated with the operation. During that time, the name of the company changed to “Brumleve Canvas Products” because the leather goods, hardware and shoe lines were sold off to make room for the expanding canvas business. This included truck and trailer tarps, boat covers, awnings and custom canvas items. In 1982, Claude retired, and Don took over. With the expanding lines of products, and the addition of a tent, table, and chair rental service, the company was incorporated in 1986 and became “Brumleve Canvas Products, Inc.”

The Move to Metal

In 1990, the company expanded its facilities with the construction of a building located at 1317 West Main St. in Teutopolis. This change helped accommodate the expansion of parts production, a new line of metal fabrication, and Load Locker Storage Boxes. With the addition of metal products, the company name changed to “Brumleve Industries, Inc.” In 1997, the entire manufacturing company moved to the 1317 location once a showroom, parts room, warehouse, and production area had been added. With the changes in technology, in 2002 a plasma cutting table was also incorporated into the parts production of our manufacturing company. In 2007, electric tarps became a part of the tarpaulin line. In 2011, Brumleve Industries sold the tent, table and chair rental business, and in 2012 a water jet was purchased to amplify metal fabrication.

Current Owners

Donald Brumleve welcomed his son Michael Brumleve to the business in 2015. Although Donald currently owns Brumleve Industries, Inc., Michael intends to continue the growth of the family-run manufacturing company as a fourth-generation owner.
